Ait Ben Haddou From Marrakech

Day 1Program

Early morning departure. We will cross the High Atlas Mountains and reach the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, rising to 2,260 meters, the highest road pass in Morocco, which connects Marrakech to the Saharan regions, with Ouarzazate as a key crossroads. Along the way, we will stop to visit the famous fortified village of Aït Ben Haddou. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this iconic kasbah has served as the backdrop for numerous international films, including The Jewel of the Nile, Lawrence of Arabia, Sodom and Gomorrah, Jesus of Nazareth, The Mummy, Gladiator, Seven Years in Tibet, Alexander, Babel, and Game of Thrones.

Upon arrival in Ouarzazate, we will visit the Taourirt Kasbah, built in the 17th century and described by Henri Terrasse as “the jewel of this region” in Kasbahs berbères de l’Atlas et des Oasis (Horizons de France, Paris, 1938, p. 93).

Sheltered by palm trees, Ouarzazate has grown on the edge of a vast rocky landscape swept by Saharan winds. While summer temperatures can easily reach 45°C, just a short distance away you can admire the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas. The surrounding oases and mountains hide remarkable treasures: magnificent kasbahs with earthen walls and imposing towers that transport you to a world where time seems to have stood still.

The excursion to Ouarzazate from Marrakech was a wonderful experience. Crossing the High Atlas Mountains is spectacular, and the visit to the Aït Ben Haddou Kasbah is truly impressive. Ouarzazate and the Taourirt Kasbah are well worth the visit. Everything was well organized and very enjoyable. I highly recommend this excursion!
