Essaouira, port city on the Atlantic coast, called Amogdul (the well-kept) in Berber, probably because it is so well protected thanks to its long walls.
Essaouira looks both exotic and familiar, accompanied by the incessant cries of seagulls flying over the city. At first glance, it may seem that you are in a town in French Brittany, but once inside its walls, it is an infinitely Moroccan town. Its medina is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Walking through its endless white streets transports you to another era in a scenario where nothing has changed. Strolling around, we find the ancient Portuguese canyons lined up in a battery facing the Atlantic Ocean. Its walls protected the troops of Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abadía and later Orson Welles used them as a stage to film his film “Othello”.
Don’t forget to visit its old port known for its abundant sardine fishing. The predominant color of this port is blue, because according to experts and fishermen it is better to deceive the sardines and this facilitates their capture. and thus, improve the catch of the day.
In addition to this usefulness that they give to the color blue, it should be noted that this color gives this landscape a very relaxing and spiritual aspect. Essaouira is also consolidating itself as an important point for practicing sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing or kayaking.
