Itinerary
4 days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Day 1Marrakech-High Atlas Tichka -Ouarzazate-Skoura -Valley of Roses-Dades Valley

After breakfast, your 4-day Sahara Desert tour begins at 8:00 a.m., when you meet your driver-guide at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. Prepare for a scenic and unforgettable journey as you cross the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters. Along the way, enjoy several photo stops to admire panoramic mountain views, Berber villages, and dramatic landscapes — this route is considered one of the most beautiful in Morocco.

As you ascend from the plains of Marrakech, observe the change in vegetation, from olive groves and forests to rocky slopes dotted with traditional Berber adobe villages, blending into the arid southern terrain. Descend into the southern slopes of the Atlas to reach Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert,” and a famous filming location for Hollywood epics.

Continue your journey through the scenic Skoura Oasis, known for its palm groves and historic kasbahs, then pass through the fragrant Valley of Roses, which blooms spectacularly each spring. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in the dramatic Dades Valley, a land of rugged gorges, ochre cliffs, and peaceful villages. Dinner and overnight stay in a traditional hotel or guesthouse surrounded by the Dades Gorges.

Day 2Dadès Valley-Todra Gorge-Erfoud-Merzouga-Dunes of Erg Chebbi

After breakfast, continue your journey along the Dades Valley, following a scenic road lined with traditional kasbahs and ksour (fortified villages), all set against a backdrop of ochre, red, and mauve rock formations. The road winds through lush oases and palm groves until you reach Tineghir, a charming town nestled at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains.

Just a few kilometers away lie the stunning Todra Gorges, a natural wonder with towering limestone cliffs reaching up to 300 meters, carved by the Todra River. Located at an altitude of 1,350 meters and bordered by a lush palm oasis, the gorges offer a spectacular setting perfect for walks and photography.

From Todra, continue southeast towards Erfoud, a town known as the fossil capital of Morocco, where you can explore workshops that transform ancient marine fossils into decorative pieces and marble art. As the terrain becomes more arid, you’ll follow desert trails to reach Merzouga, the gateway to the legendary Erg Chebbi dunes.

Here, you’ll swap your 4×4 for a camel trek across the golden dunes, experiencing the rhythm of the desert as the sun sets over the horizon. Arrive at your luxury desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea before settling into your traditional haima (Berber tent). Enjoy a typical Moroccan dinner under a star-filled sky, followed by live Berber drumming and music around the campfire — a truly unforgettable Sahara experience.

Day 3Merzouga-Rissani-Alnif-Nkob-Agdz-Draa Valley-Ouarzazate

Early risers will be rewarded with the breathtaking experience of a Sahara Desert sunrise, one of the most magical moments of the entire journey. After enjoying breakfast at the desert camp, mount your camel once again for a peaceful ride across the dunes of Erg Chebbi, returning to the meeting point where your driver awaits.

We then depart toward Rissani, a town steeped in history and once the capital of the first Alaouite dynasty. Known for its authentic souks, Rissani hosts a vibrant market where local nomads trade livestock, spices, dates, and traditional goods. If your visit coincides with a market day, you’ll have the chance to witness this fascinating scene of traditional Moroccan commerce.

The journey continues south along the spectacular Draa Valley, home to Morocco’s longest river. Along the way, admire the lush date palm groves, centuries-old Berber villages, and stunning adobe kasbahs that rise from the valley floor. The landscape is marked by striking geological formations, adding to the natural beauty of the region.

Arrive in Ouarzazate, also known as the “Gateway to the Sahara,” where you can relax and unwind at your hotel or guesthouse. Take the evening to rest and reflect on the incredible contrasts between desert, oasis, and mountain that you’ve experienced throughout the day.

Day 4Ouarzazate-Ait Ben Haddou-Marrakech-Transfer hotel / Riad

After breakfast, you may opt for a short visit to the legendary Atlas Film Studios, also known as the Universal Studios of Morocco, where famous films like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy were filmed. Alternatively, explore the impressive Kasbah of Taourirt, a former palace of the Glaoui dynasty, known for its maze-like architecture and historic significance.

Next, head toward the iconic Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved ksour (fortified villages) in Morocco. This stunning earthen complex, perched on a hill along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, has served as a backdrop for numerous Hollywood blockbusters. You’ll have free time to walk through the narrow alleys, explore the ancient dwellings, and climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding desert plains and mountains.

After this cultural immersion, begin your return journey to Marrakech by crossing once again the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Enjoy dramatic landscapes, picturesque Berber villages, and scenic photo stops along the way. Arrival in Marrakech is expected in the afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or riad, where you can relax or continue exploring the vibrant sights, sounds, and colors of the Red City.
